Royal 1st Devon Yeomanry

The 1st Devon Troop was raised in 1794. After various evolutions the Royal east Devon Yeomanry Cavalry was disbanded in 1835.

The Royal 1st Devonshire Yeomanry Cavalry was raised again in 1871. These coloured cartes-de visite show us their red jacket, adorned with a braiding pattern that is quite similar to the Royal Horse Artillery. Cuff and collar facings are blue.

It is quite interesting to see that the older photo (to the left) displays a dragoon pattern helmet ; this will be later changed for the busby - and the 1st Devon Yeomanry will bear the title Hussar.
